The world’s major producing countries of oil palm fruits include Indonesia, Malaysia, Thailand, Nigeria, and Colombia, together representing 91 % of global palm oil production in 2024. Historically, the significant deforestation associated with the production of palm oil is estimated close to 11 million hectares between 2001-2023, mostly in Indonesia, Malaysia, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. With the European Union’s relative import share of palm oil products just over 50% from Indonesia and 23% from Malaysia in 2024, palm oil constitutes an important commodity in the scope of the European Union Deforestation Regulation. In the Union, the Netherlands, Italy, and Spain are the major palm oil importing countries.
